The Son of the Amazons is a short fiction film written and directed by Otman Salil.
It is part of “Childhood Has Its Colours” (L'enfance a ses couleurs), a trilogy of short films on childhood made by young directors. The trilogy presents three varied treatments, all centered around the theme of childhood and separation from parents.
The Moroccan ocean that Otman Salil depicts, with its waves of colours crashing against the beaches of a dogmatic culture that does not tolerate difference, features shots, sounds, and dialogues that always have two faces: one intimate, soft, and modest, representing family and protection; the other, violent yet common, representing society.
On one side are the Amazons, and on the other, dogmas. Between the two is a ten-year-old child who doesn't know where to direct his calm anger. Beyond a portrait of women and a culture, Otman Salil presents a film about childhood, inspired by his own life and that of his father. The conviction he has in his story comes from its intimate and personal strength, telling the story of a father's childhood and understanding what can be generated by an education led by women in a world claimed by men.
